West Coast Summer 2026 (Series)

Across June and July 2026, I took my chance to explore the Scottish West Coast and delve into my surroundings more, finding the beauty in the landscapes, nature and picturesque coast.

I first took a visit to Millport, a town on the Isle of Cumbrae, I have been to Millport many times before, however, never has it once rain so much that I was worried my photos wouldn’t come out so well. Turns out that the rain added the ambience proving that Scottish weather doesn’t bother me that much!

Then on a walk back from the Mechanics, I took a long wander along the coastline from Stevenston to Saltcoats looking at the nature on my front doorstep. Instead, I found natural impurities (signs tossed in rivers, plastic bottles left behind) and results of consistent wear and tear. This led me to think about how the local council looks after the state of the coastline, which doesn’t seem to be well. You can see in the tide times photograph (below) that the time sheets are water damaged due to lack of care from the council, this isn’t so good as the tide times are listed near a pier which is noted to busy with young people during summer.

I then went on a trip to Dunure, near Ayr. Dunure was made popular due to it’s scenery and historic castle (Outlander was filmed there!). I adore Dunure, an easy 30-45 minute trip in the car and there I am, surrounded by the castle, pigeons, butterflies and hundreds of greenery. During this trip, I wanted to focus more on my nature photography, particularly focusing on taking pictures of critters and bugs. Butterflies then became the focus and the majority of photos from my “Scottish Flying Butter” segment are from my Dunure trip. (There may be a moth or two in that segment…)

To wrap up my West Coast Summer series, I took a trip to Kelburn Country Park, near Largs. Although slightly expensive (£7 entry for the car and then £17 for two rolls and two drinks!), this was the perfect place to wrap up the series. I was with my Dad and we had discussed how when I was younger a trip to Kelburn used to be a full day trip as we were able to get into the castle, go to the play park and run around the gardens. This time however, it was a trip around the Glen, noticing the artworks that have out in place since my last trip, avoiding slips and making my way around a log which had fell onto the path! The artwork below and in the final of the viewing gallery are apart of “Face Chandelier” by Pete and Sue Hill.

Nature Photography

Scottish Flying Butter

From trips throughout Ayrshire, Scotland, I spotted many a butterfly and the odd moth. I mainly took pictures of Red Admirals; however, when I went to Dunure, I also spotted a Green Veined White butterfly and a lovely Six-spot Burnet moth on some flowers.

Murderous Flocks

Further day-tripping through Ayrshire, Scotland, led me to take many photos of seagulls, crows, and magpies. From Flocks to Murders, the Ayrshire Coast is full of them.
